How to Travel with Chronic Pain—Real Strategies for Taking the Trip You Deserve
If you dream of a vacation but the realities of chronic pain or illness make you hesitant, you’re not alone—and you’re not at a dead end. As the owner of Engage! Travel Co. and creator of Travel with Life, I’ve seen first-hand that travel isn’t something you have to put on pause; instead, it can be an integral part of living fully, and can be integrated into managing chronic conditions. Even when it feels insurmountable. My own journey—navigating chronic pelvic pain, along with other medical complexities— is part of why I brought together a travel agency with my passion for writing, planning, and serving others. My own journey has taught me that travel can be both my lifeline and my way forward, even when circumstances are tough.
Travel is my reset. Getting out of my environment, changing scenery, immersing myself in something different than my everyday. A lifeline. And I’m passionate about making this possible for others.
Which is why I’m thrilled to share about my new e-book Your Guide to Making Travel Possible: Practical Checklists and Support to Confidently Travel with Chronic Pain and Chronic Conditions.
For those who have followed my journey, you know that “Travel with Life” is more than just a catchy phrase. It’s the heart of a movement I am deeply passionate about building. After years of navigating the world with chronic pain and helping others do the same, I’ve developed my own systems, and practical approaches that have made travel possible for me and my clients. Now, I want to make those tools even more accessible.
If you hold dreams of traveling, a dream vacation, continuing to explore the world, needing a reset getaway, and your heart feels held back by health challenges or a chronic condition, this e-book is for you. It’s filled with practical tools, real-world wisdom, and the encouragement I wish I had when I started my own journey.
When travel feels challenging
Living with a chronic condition can feel isolating. It often feels like the world is designed for people who don’t have to think about pacing, pain levels, or medical needs. The dream of seeing new places can start to feel like an impossible fantasy, replaced by worries about “what ifs.”
I know those feelings intimately. I’ve been there. I’ve faced the tough moments, the flare-ups in unfamiliar places, and the mental gymnastics required to plan a trip that is both exciting and manageable. And through my own journey and helping my travel clients, I have learned that it is possible to travel with life—not in spite of your condition, but with it. One might say I stumbled into this realization, not grasping just how much I needed to get away after my own cancer diagnosis in 2016. I was “lucky” that we already had a trip planned to Disney World before I was diagnosed, and in the end I was beyond grateful to get to go on this trip with my family. And wow, I learned a big lesson about the value of a reset getaway. This is part of the root of why I wanted to create resources that could do the same for others. It’s part of why I now help clients travel the world. Because I get it.
